frame by frame by second
how memory works:
you never forget the smell of tear
gas    the way a crowd surges
forward    and you quickening
to what matters–
pigeons still reeling across the sky
horse’s hot breath – the violence
when it comes – so familiar
you’re surprised    the panic almost a
second thought    what works
itself out:    your body.  carrying
your body.  vision narrowing to pavement
to crowd – its light roar –
