Two Poems

Chihuahua

I ask my friend
if she has ever
been to Chihuahua?

She doesn’t respond
as if I’m speaking
an alien tongue.

She is tired of
hearing me ask her
this everyday I see her.

I mean nothing by
my question.  I’m
just messing with her.

Tired of my question, she
raises her voice and says,
Why don’t you go there!

The Cow’s Soul

The blood from
the defrosted
hamburger meat
ends up in our
kitchen floor.

I think of
the cow that this
blood must have come
from.  I wonder
if its soul

or spirit
is in our home
now.  I mop up
its soul before
someone slips.
