In Terms of Time

In terms of time the city can be celestial the city can be heavenly the city can be nitty-gritty surreptitiously subversive when the city is Hamburg & you’re sitting outside the Café Paris in the Rathausstraße on a cool Monday morning because inside it’s full & what isn’t full is reserved & anyway it’s nearly deserted outside & much more in keeping with your all-alone-in-the-big-city state of mind but then a half an hour goes dragging by & although you’ve managed to make eye contact with all three of the young German waitresses who work there—one of them even briefly smiling at you through one of the big open windows with one of those meaningless-empty-gesture harried-waitress-smiles—not one of them has felt compelled to step outside & see what it is you might actually want flitting about inside with their Hanseatic reserve & professional aloofness & part of you is getting all edgy & uptight & impatient in a very small caliber way thinking this would never happen in Paris… while simultaneously another part of you is loosening up & going with the flow just taking it all in with a sort of munificent & benign stoicism thinking every minute every second the birthing world collides with the dying world and produces the here & now… & for that lightning-bolt flash of diamond-cutting wisdom you could almost be grateful if you didn’t have such an insuperable hankering for a piping hot café au lait & a flaky fluffy croissant.

Zeitlich Betrachtet
