Mark Young – Two Poems

Two Poems

Bald Eagle

Have you ever listened
to the way most
drummers sing?  So
regular, so pedestrian,
like a train captive to
its tracks.  It seems
they cannot forget
that they are drummers
so sit on the rhythm
of the song as if
scared of losing it
if they let go.  Welcome
to the Hotel California.

A Done Deal

He refused to talk
about the past.  It’s
a done deal he
would say, something
you cannot change
even if you wanted
to.  That was the
public face; privately
he was reinventing it,
rearranging it in a way
that made it more
palatable to remember,
more profitable for a
later presentation.
