Ricky Garni

Poet, Writer, Graphic Designer, and Composer

Ricky Garni is an American poet, writer, graphic designer, and composer based in North Carolina. He has produced dozens of books of poetry and prose, including Maybe Wavy, 2% Butterscotch, Peppermint, My Favorite Fifteen Presidents, and The Eternal Journals of Crispy Flotilla.

Garni belongs among contemporary poets whose writing draws energy from humor, visual art, music, memory, ordinary routines, and unexpected turns of association. His poems often begin from familiar objects or situations and let them widen into comic speculation.

Books and independent publishing

Garni has published an unusually large body of poetry and prose through independent and small-scale editions. His books include the Wavy series, 2% Butterscotch, Peppermint, Dots, My Favorite Fifteen Presidents, and the autobiographical multimedia project The Eternal Journals of Crispy Flotilla.

The scale of this output reflects a sustained writing practice built outside a single institutional publishing path. Short books, sequences, prose poems, visual design, and recurring projects allow individual ideas to develop across several forms.

Humor and observation

Garni’s poems frequently use ordinary life as a point of departure. Mail trucks, computers, food, art, streets, travel, family, and everyday habits can become structures for comic reflection. The tone is often light on its surface while remaining attentive to memory, mortality, affection, and the strangeness of routine.

This mixture of accessibility and formal freedom connects his work with a broad field of experimental poetry in which play and seriousness can occupy the same poem.

Visual art and design

Garni has worked for many years as a graphic designer. Visual composition also enters his literary work through book design, collaboration, image, and an awareness of how words occupy a page.

His design practice extends beyond his own books. He has contributed visual work to other poets’ publications, bringing typography and image into direct conversation with literary form.

Music and performance

Garni has also worked as a composer, studio musician, and recording professional. Music provides another context for poetry attentive to timing, repetition, voice, and tonal surprise.

He has participated in readings and literary events throughout North Carolina’s Triangle region, where independent bookstores, cafés, magazines, and performance series have supported a long-running local poetry culture.

Background

Garni grew up in Florida and Maine, studied at Phillips Exeter Academy and Duke University, and has lived for many years in central North Carolina. Over the course of his working life he has been a teacher, wine merchant, musician, composer, and graphic designer.

His poems have appeared in numerous print and online journals, including Oyster Boy Review and Offcourse, and his work has received multiple Pushcart Prize nominations.

Literary context

Garni’s career exemplifies a durable strand of American poetry sustained by independent magazines, self-directed book projects, local readings, visual collaboration, and continuous publication.

Across that body of work, humor remains a method of attention: an ordinary detail can open toward art, memory, love, absurdity, or philosophical reflection without losing the conversational ease of the original scene.
