Michael Levell

Poet and Author of Green River Road

Michael Levell is a Denver-area poet and teacher whose work combines traditional composition with collage, cut-up, erasure, selection, and chance. His chapbook Green River Road was published by Finishing Line Press in 2018.

Levell belongs among contemporary poets whose writing treats language as material that can be arranged, interrupted, recovered, and transformed. His poems often bring personal observation into contact with fragments that feel discovered, displaced, or newly assembled.

Green River Road

Green River Road is Levell’s first chapbook published by an established press. The collection uses several compositional approaches, including collage, cut-up, erasure, chance, and more traditional forms of drafting and revision.

The resulting poems balance recognizable scenes with unexpected verbal turns. Sources and personal writing can occupy the same field, allowing meanings to change as lines are rearranged and placed beside one another.

Collage, chance, and revision

Levell’s approach places him within a long tradition of writers who use found language and procedural methods to expand the possibilities of the poem. Chance can introduce an unexpected relation between words; editing then gives that accident shape, rhythm, and pressure.

This combination of openness and control connects his work with forms of experimental poetry that use fragmentation, juxtaposition, and altered source material as compositional tools.

Denver and teaching

Levell was born and raised in Southern Indiana and later made his home in Denver, Colorado. He has taught writing and literature in Aurora, Colorado, and has participated in the Denver-area literary community through readings and publications.

A 2015 poetry feature in Boulder Weekly identified him as a Denver poet and writing and literature teacher. His work in the classroom and his literary practice share an attention to the possibilities of language: how sentences are made, how they can be taken apart, and how unexpected combinations can generate new meanings.

Poetic method

Levell’s poems often begin with concrete language and allow association to widen the scene. Landscape, place, memory, cultural reference, and ordinary speech can be reorganized into forms that remain readable while resisting a single fixed interpretation.
