Adam Clay and “Study in Cartography”
Adam Clay is an American poet, editor, and teacher whose books include The Wash, A Hotel Lobby at the Edge of the World, Stranger, To Make Room for the Sea, and Circle Back. His poems frequently move through memory, grief, landscape, parenthood, ecological perception, and the uncertain maps people make from experience.
Issue 14 records Clay under the title “Study in Cartography.” The surviving page preserves the title and authorship while the poem text itself is absent. A contemporary University of Arkansas publication record independently confirms this poem and its Issue 14 appearance.

Clay’s author site documents his books, publications, editorial work, and role as Director of Creative Writing at Louisiana State University. Milkweed Editions published Circle Back in 2024, a collection concerned with grief, memory, and the cyclical return of experience. The University of Arkansas preserves an early publication record that explicitly lists “Study in Cartography.”
