Melissa Eleftherion is a Brooklyn-born poet, librarian, and visual artist living in Northern California. Her poetry collections include field guide to autobiography, gutter rainbows, Suture, and Malocchia, alongside a substantial body of chapbooks including huminsect, prism maps, Pigtail Duty, and abject sutures.
Eleftherion belongs among contemporary poets whose writing moves between bodily experience, found language, visual form, memory, trauma, ecology, and the structures used to classify living things.
field guide to autobiography
field guide to autobiography, published by The Operating System in 2018, uses the language of field guides, flora, fauna, and classification to approach the body and personal history. Scientific and descriptive vocabularies become materials for examining identity, gender, memory, and embodiment.
The book demonstrates a recurring quality in Eleftherion’s work: an existing system of language can be entered, rearranged, and made to carry intimate experience.
Suture
Suture, published by Cooper Dillon Books in 2026, is a sequence of erasure poems that works through source texts associated with V. C. Andrews. The poems use removal, spacing, and recombination to approach trauma, silence, memory, and the difficult process of recovery.
Erasure gives absence a visible role. What disappears from the source becomes part of the poem’s emotional structure, while the words that remain form a new, compressed text. Readers interested in related practices can continue through experimental poetry.
huminsect
The chapbook huminsect, published by dancing girl press in 2013, belongs to Eleftherion’s long exploration of bodies and nonhuman life. Its title joins human and insect worlds, suggesting the unstable borders between species, anatomy, environment, and metaphor.
That ecological and bodily imagination recurs across later work, where scientific language can become lyric material and the body can appear as habitat, archive, wound, or field of transformation.
Poet, librarian, and literary community
Eleftherion manages the Ukiah Branch Library and curates the LOBA Reading Series. She served as Poet Laureate of the City of Ukiah from 2021 to 2024.
Library work and poetry meet in her commitment to literary community: books circulate through public institutions, reading series create encounters among writers and readers, and local literary culture becomes part of the conditions in which poems continue to live.
Visual art and form
Eleftherion is also a visual artist. Her poetry frequently demonstrates a visual sensitivity through spacing, erasure, arrangement, and the relation between fragment and white space.
This attention to the page gives her work affinities with visual and collage-based traditions in American poetry, while her subjects remain grounded in lived bodily and social experience.
Education and recognition
Eleftherion holds degrees from Brooklyn College, Mills College, and San Jose State University. Her work has appeared widely in literary journals, and she has received multiple Pushcart Prize nominations.
Her career joins writing, librarianship, visual art, teaching, public literary service, and independent publishing across more than a decade of books and chapbooks.
